ARRIVALS SHOWING SIGNIFICANT DECLINES IN ASIA-PACIFIC COUNTRIES
The impact of the global economic and financial situation is beginning to be felt across many Asia Pacific destinations

The impact of the global economic and financial situation is beginning to be felt across many Asia Pacific destinations. Some trends are now track-able, thanks to timely visitor arrivals reporting systems in place by some of the region's more professional national tourism organisations. Here is a brief summary:
 NEW ZEALAND
 Latest statistics from New Zealand show that a late Easter led to a 9.2 per cent jump in international arrivals for April; almost 16,500 visitors. When the two months of March and April are combined, to remove the effect of Easter, arrivals were down 1.8 per cent.
 Total arrivals from Australia were up 7 per cent over the combined months of March and April compared with the same two months last year. Australian holiday arrivals were up 9.8 per cent.
 International Visitor Arrivals in New Zealand April 2009:
 • Australia: 90,508, up 22.8%
 • UK: 17,930, up 1.0%
 • US: 14,388, up 1.4%
 • Canada: 3,212, up 6.2%
 • China: 10,670, down 6.0%
 • Korea: 3,806, down 45.5%
 • Japan: 6,072, down 15.7%

 *The International Visitor Arrivals (IVA) survey provides monthly statistics on Inbound travel by international visitors to New Zealand , including visitors by country, purpose, length of stay, age, sex, port of arrival and mode of transport (air/sea).
 AUSTRALIA
 • 1,451,100 visitor arrivals to Australia during Jan-March 2009, (-3% over the same period of 2008).
 • 5.5 million visitor arrivals during the year ended 31 March 2009, (-2% over the same period of 2008).
 • 488,600 visitor arrivals during March 2009, (-5% over the same period of 2008).
 Key trends by market.
 New Zealand: 81,500 visitors from New Zealand during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 221,300 (-1%).
 Europe: 71,600 visitors from the United Kingdom during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 210,100 (-9%); 14,800 visitors from Germany during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-to March 2009 to 45,100 (-4%).
 The Americas: 40,900 visitors from the USA during March 2009 bringing the total for the three months to March 2009 to 119,200 (-7%); 12,100 visitors from Canada during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 39,000 (-5%).
 Southeast Asia: 23,200 visitors from Singapore during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 60,800, flat relative to the same period of the previous year; 19,900 visitors from Malaysia during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 49,200 (+18%); 7,800 visitors from Thailand during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 18,700 (-2%); 10,600 visitors from India during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 30,400 (+11%).
 Northeast Asia: 42,000 visitors from Japan during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 106,200 (+22%); 15,800 visitors from Korea during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 50,700 (-23%); 34,200 visitors from China during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 135,500 (+12%); 13,100 visitors from Hong Kong during March 2009 bringing the total for Jan-March 2009 to 41,900 (-1%).

 SINGAPORE
 Visitor arrivals to Singapore reached 790,000 in March 2009, -13.2% compared to March 2008. Visitor days were estimated at 3.0 million days, -11.0% in comparison with March 2008.
 Indonesia (128,000), P R China (91,000), Malaysia (60,000), Australia (55,000), and UK (53,000) were Singapore’s top five visitor-generating markets. These markets accounted for 49% of total visitor arrivals for the month.
 Among the top 15 markets, Malaysia (+5.6%), Germany (+4.7%) and Vietnam (+1.9%) registered growth. This can be attributed to the occurrence of school holidays in Malaysia, and ongoing promotions in Germany and Vietnam.
 Visitor arrivals in 12 out of the top 15 markets decreased compared to the same month last year, a reflection of the impact of the current global economic slowdown on consumer sentiments and discretionary spending.
 Singapore gazetted hotels were estimated to generate S$125 million in room revenue, representing a decrease of 33.3% versus March 2008.
 The Average Room Rate (ARR) in March 2009 was estimated at S$196, representing a decrease of 18.5% over March 2008. The Average Occupancy Rate (AOR) for gazetted hotels was estimated to reach 74% in March 2009, posting a 13.1 percentage point decrease over March 2008. Revenue Per Available Room (Revpar) decreased by 30.9% to reach S$145 for March 2009.

 VIETNAM
 International visitors to Vietnam in April are estimated at 305,430. International visitors in first quarter reached 1,297,672, down 17.over the same period of year 2008. Full details.
 SRI LANKA
 Visitor arrivals to Sri Lanka totalled 26,054 in April 2009, down 12.4% over 29,747 in April 2009. In the Jan-Aprl period, arrivals fell -19.7%, from 165,263 to 132,756. Full details.
